How is GPA calculated on the 4.0 scale?

Each letter grade maps to points (A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0 … F = 0). Multiply each course's points by its credit hours to get quality points, sum them, and divide by total credit hours. A 3-credit A and a 4-credit B give (12 + 12) ÷ 7 ≈ 3.43.

Credits weight the average — a low grade in a heavy course hurts more than in a light one. US institutions typically regard 3.5+ as strong and 3.0 as the common cutoff for many programs; always confirm your own institution's exact scale.

Frequently asked questions

How is GPA calculated?
Each grade has a point value (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, etc.). Multiply each course's points by its credit hours, sum these quality points, then divide by total credit hours.
What grade scale does this use?
The standard US 4.0 scale with plus/minus steps: A/A+ = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0 and so on down to F = 0.0. If your institution uses different values, check its official scale.
Can I calculate a cumulative GPA?
Yes — enter every course from all semesters at once, and the weighted result is your cumulative GPA.
