How do leap years actually work?

Earth's orbit takes about 365.2422 days, so calendars drift without correction. The Gregorian rule: every year divisible by 4 is a leap year, except century years, which must be divisible by 400 — so 2000 and 2400 are leap years while 1900 and 2100 are not.

This gives an average year of 365.2425 days, accurate to about one day in 3,300 years. The next leap years after 2026 are 2028, 2032 and 2036.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a year a leap year?
A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4 — unless it is a century year (like 1900), in which case it must be divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year but 1900 was not.
Why do leap years exist?
Earth takes about 365.2422 days to orbit the sun. Adding a day roughly every four years keeps the calendar aligned with the seasons.
Is 2026 a leap year?
No. 2026 is not divisible by 4. The next leap year after 2026 is 2028.
